One of the many things that you see Special Response Group doing is actively engaging with our clients and community. That being said we are bringing up the topic of smoke detectors. When you look at the research to how many people and their homes could have been saved if they had either installed smoke detectors if they didn't have them, or made sure that they were properly functioning, it's mind boggling.

Smoke alarms have become such a common feature in U.S. homes that it is easy to take them for granted. Newspapers often report fires in which blaring smoke alarms alerted sleeping occupants to danger. These devices alert countless others to fires just as they are starting. When writing this post, three of the most common facts needed to be shared.

So chew on this:

  • Three out of five home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties without working smoke alarms.
  • The risk of dying in reported home structure fires is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.
  • Smoke alarm failures usually result from missing, disconnected, or dead batteries.

So what do you need to do to safeguard your life, your family, your home or business?

  • If you live in a single family home, ensure that your smoke detectors are working. Press the test button and make sure that it sounds a loud audible tone. Some houses have pre-wired smoke detectors that connect to the home's power system. If they don't work, you can purchase one or several at your local hardware store or even Wal-Mart carries them at a fair price.
  • If you reside within a multi-family home (Apartment) the same applies. If your unsure that your smoke detector works, contact your maintenance team for your complex. They can not only test it but also provide or install batteries for you.
  • If you are going away on vacation have a friend check in on your home. This not only helps with the prevention of fires, but also provides an opportunity to make sure the home is secure in general. - If you didn't know, Special Response Group offers this as an option. A trained and skilled Armed officer can check on your home for both fire and overall security while you are away enjoying your vacation. Peace of mind? We give you that.
